Medicare

Medicare Health Insurance

Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States designed for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. It consists of different parts that cover various aspects of healthcare.

Understanding Medicare

1. Medicare Part A

This covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

2. Medicare Part B

This covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and some home health care.

3. Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

This is a comprehensive plan offered by private insurance companies that includes coverage from both Part A and Part B, often with additional benefits like vision and dental.

4. Medicare Part D

This provides prescription drug coverage, and it can be added to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) or included in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Selecting the right Medicare plan involves considering individual healthcare needs and preferences.

Enrollment Periods

Understanding Medicare enrollment periods is crucial to ensure you have the coverage you need at the right time.

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is the seven-month period that begins three months before the individual turns 65, includes the month they turn 65, and continues for three months after.
  • General Enrollment Period (GEP): If someone misses their IEP, they can enroll during the GEP, which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year.
  • Special Enrollment Period (SEP): This is available for those who qualify due to certain life events, such as moving, losing other health coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help with prescription drug costs.
